Four faculty and staff have recently retired from the School of Social Work. Jane Macy retired during winter quarter 2023, Kathy Taylor in spring, and Norma Timbang and Lynly Beard in summer. Jane, Kathy and Norma will continue their School affiliation after retirement. Please feel free to reach out to all these individuals if you’d like to send along your best wishes.
Jane Macy, part-time lecturer, retired in February. Beloved by her students, Jane had won the BASW Students’ Choice Teaching Award three years in a row: 2019, 2020 and 2021. Her area of expertise revolved around leadership, organizational design and development.
Kathy Taylor, assistant teaching professor with CWTAP, retired in April. Kathy spent most of her career in child welfare where she used her outstanding organizational, management and teaching skills to advance professional development. In 2015, she became a teaching associate and practicum supervisor at CWTAP, developing and conducting trainings, working with students to develop their practicum learning contracts, and helping them transition to the job market. In 2021, she received the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Volunteer Recognition Award.
Norma Timbang, part-time lecturer, retired in June. Norma was honored recently with the 2023 BASW Students’ Choice Teaching Award. She had also received the MSW Students’ Choice Teaching Award on several occasions. In 2019 she was one of four awardees for the Acey Social Justice Feminist Award. Norma is known for building effective working relationships with community activists and legislators, and has worked on community campaigns around human rights and immigrant issues.
Lynly Beard, who was the School’s liaison librarian at the UW Health Sciences Library since 2016, retired July 3. She received her master’s in library and information science from the University of Washington and an MBA from the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School of Business. Her dedication to research provided immeasurable support to the School’s faculty and students as they pursued their scholarship interests. Before joining the School, Lynly worked as a technical research librarian at Veritox, then at the UW Health Sciences User Experience group.
